Falklands Veterans To Receive Freedom Of The Borough

The Gosport Council were unanimous in their decision to grant the Freedom of the Borough to all Falklands Veterans.

This great honour can only be granted to an organisation which has ties to the city, in this case through the fact that, the only Charity to be recognised as working for All Falklands Veterans and their Families, the Falklands Veterans Foundation (FVF), has set up their base in the Borough, and the great work by the charities Chief Executive Derek (Smokey) Cole, who was responsible for organising the 15th and 20th anniversary events in Gosport.

The event for all Falklands Veterans will be co-ordinated by the FVF.

Letter received by Martin Reed, SAMA Chairman concerning the Freedom of Gosport and the FVF:
Dear Martin,
I will try to explain the rational behind the Freedom of the Borough process and the thinking of members of the Council in coming to this statutory decision.
The Council can only grant the Freedom of the Borough to those who have provided eminent services to the Borough. I made it quite clear in my proposal to the Council and it was the unanimous feeling of the Council that the FVF was an umbrella organisation for all the veterans, I understand all veterans are members as they are not required to join or pay a membership fee. The FVF are based in the Borough and we do have a number of veterans living in the Borough. The FVF have repeatedly made it clear that its aims are to support all veterans and their families and to work closely with other charities and organisations concerned with the welfare of Falklands War Veterans. I believe also that it is the sole charity within the United Kingdom that supports all Falkland Veterans.
I think that it is very important to note that all political parties expressed support for the proposal in the hope it will help and honour all those involved in the Falklands Campaign which has proved to be such a decisive moment in British history and indeed, the history of the World.
The Freedom of Gosport for the FVF and therefore for all Falklands Veterans will hopefully ensure that the sacrifices made will always be remembered by those of us who benefited from them.
I hope this clarifies the Gosport Council position. We do, of course, look forward to working closely with all Falkland Veterans. organisations in the future and we will do everything we can to make the 24th August 2005 a very special day.

Yours sincerely,
Peter Edgar,
Chairman Civic and Commemorative Events
  HMS Fearless DVD Boix set

A 2 disc DVD and CD set that has something for everyone; the content is outstanding, illustrated with photographs, video and diaries from those who served onboard during the Falklands War 1982. The interactive CD-Rom is a reminder of what those Servicemen endured during the conflict to recapture the Falklands Islands back from the Argentinean Occupation Force. The DVD is a superb recollection of the memories of just six (6) crew members who served onboard HMS Fearless (L10), a landing platform dock, during the conflict. Priced at £20 (inc. postage & packaging) a unique opportunity to own this very special two disc set recapturing a great part of military history covering the tenacity of the British forces and in particular its men and a particular ship of the Royal Navy.
